Cosmology: Euclid spots the oldest quasars ever seen
In July, Europe’s Euclid space telescope reported finding 31 of the oldest quasars ever observed, two of them shining with the light of a trillion suns at a time when the universe was just 5 percent of its present age. Their light has travelled roughly 13 billion years to reach us, giving astronomers a rare window into how supermassive black holes grew so large, so early.
Quantum physics goes macroscopic
Physicists demonstrated quantum entanglement in a centimetre-sized crystal — an object large enough to hold in your hand. The result, published in early July, challenges the intuition that quantum behaviour is confined to the atomic scale and opens new paths for quantum sensing and computing hardware. In a related advance, researchers unveiled a material that makes heat programmable, controlling and directing thermal radiation while remembering its settings without continuous power.
Gene editing comes of age
Two clinical milestones marked a turning point for in-vivo gene editing:
- The first in-vivo gene editing therapy for hereditary angioedema reduced attack rates by 87 percent after a single injection.
- VERVE-102 permanently edited the PCSK9 gene in patients, cutting LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by up to 62 percent at the highest doses — a potential one-shot alternative to lifelong statins.
Researchers also described VIPR, a compact CRISPR-like system discovered in bacteriophages that may be easier to deliver into human cells than today’s gene editing tools.
Cancer: vaccines, blood tests and new drugs
An mRNA cancer vaccine for melanoma cut the risk of recurrence or death roughly in half when combined with immunotherapy, while the NHS Galleri blood test quadrupled cancer detection rates in a large UK trial. Long-term trial data also impressed: 55 percent of ALK-positive lung cancer patients on lorlatinib remained progression-free after seven years.
Metabolic medicine: the post-Ozempic generation
The triple-hormone drug retatrutide achieved roughly 28 percent body-weight reduction — results comparable to bariatric surgery — and in July the oral pill orforglipron beat oral semaglutide on both weight loss and blood sugar control in a major head-to-head trial, pointing to a future where injections may no longer be needed.
Neuroscience and beyond
Scientists reprogrammed the brain’s immune cells to fight Alzheimer’s disease: a molecule called OLE restored protective microglia, reduced toxic plaque and improved memory in disease models. Meanwhile, an AI model revealed how neutron star mergers forge the universe’s heaviest elements, and ancient DNA from a 5,000-year-old French tomb rewrote the story of the collapse of Europe’s megalith builders.

From one-shot gene therapies to quantum effects visible at human scale, the past month suggests several fields are crossing from promise to practice at once. The common thread is precision — in editing genes, detecting cancers earlier, and measuring the universe’s first billion years.
