- Neuroimaging model trained on routine hospital scans beats a general model at triage – A foundation model called NeuroVFM learned to read brain scans from uncurated clinical archives rather than curated research sets. It was trained by self-supervision on 5.24 million MRI and CT volumes from 567,000 studies gathered over two decades at Michigan Medicine, then run live across the health system for one week in January 2026. A University of Michigan team published it in Nature Medicine on August 3. It scored 21.4 points above GPT-5 on triage of critical findings, but the authors state it is not an approved medical device and the prospective test covered one hospital system for one week.
- Basque screening programme tracks a 30 percent fall in colorectal cancer deaths – Colorectal cancer mortality in the Basque Country fell 29.6 percent between 2004 and 2024, from 32.8 to 23.1 deaths per 100,000, across the rollout of an organised faecal immunochemical test programme. The study covered about 2.2 million people and 438,134 deaths, 16,298 of them from colorectal cancer, with median participation of 71.3 percent and a 50.1 percent decline among those aged 50 to 69. It is retrospective with no individual-level link between who was screened and who died, so the authors state it cannot establish causation or separate screening from parallel gains in treatment.
- Cardiovascular benefit peaked near ten hours of activity a week in a UK cohort – Device-measured moderate-to-vigorous activity of roughly 560 to 610 minutes per week was associated with the largest drop in cardiovascular events, far above the 150 minutes most guidelines set as a floor. The analysis followed 17,088 UK Biobank participants of average age 57 wearing accelerometers, recording 1,233 cardiovascular events over 7.8 years. It is observational and cannot show cause, fitness was estimated rather than measured, and the cohort was 96 percent white and probably fitter than the general population.

- Plasma vortices 20 kilometres wide resolved on the Sun’s surface – Swirls of plasma about 20 kilometres across were detected along the edges of solar granules, the convection cells tiling the visible surface of the Sun. They appear to be Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, the shearing effect that also curls clouds and ocean waves, and they can twist magnetic field lines and carry energy upward. David Kuridze, Michiel van Noort, Sami K. Solanki and colleagues published the work in Nature, using the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii with a camera built at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research. The team notes the vortices sit at the resolution limit of the largest solar telescope now operating, so their frequency and their contribution to heating the corona remain unquantified.
- XENONnT finds no light dark matter and tightens the exclusion limits – A search through 7.8 tonne-years of ionisation-only data found no unexplained signal from axion-like particles or dark photons. The XENON collaboration runs 5.9 tonnes of liquid xenon beneath the Gran Sasso massif in Italy and analysed the data blind, with machine-learning background models, so the outcome could not be tuned toward a detection. The limits appear in Physical Review Letters dated August 7, from E. Aprile and the XENON collaboration. This is a null result, and the experiment now sits near the point where solar neutrinos mimic dark matter signals, a floor that caps this detector design.

- Atlantic overturning held up when its warm-water feed nearly stopped 3.4 million years ago – During a cold interval in the late Pliocene the Agulhas Leakage, the flow of warm salty Indian Ocean water into the Atlantic, almost shut down, yet the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation stayed strong or strengthened rather than weakening as standard theory predicts. The reconstruction used fossil dinocysts and lipid biomarkers from an ocean drilling core on the Agulhas Plateau, about 500 kilometres south of South Africa, checked against climate simulations. Suning Hou and colleagues at Utrecht University published it in Nature Geoscience. The authors state the result is not a forecast for the modern AMOC, since Pliocene geography differed and the Arctic freshwater inputs driving present-day concern were absent.
- Most thawed Arctic permafrost carbon is buried rather than vented as greenhouse gas – About 10 percent of the ancient permafrost carbon washed into the Arctic Ocean is turned by microbes into greenhouse gases, with the rest retained in seafloor sediment. Researchers took sediment cores offshore of Qikiqtaruk, Herschel Island in Canada, spanning roughly 50 years of deposition, and used carbon-13 and carbon-14 in the pore water to separate buried carbon from carbon already respired. Manuel Ruben, Gesine Mollenhauer and colleagues at the Alfred Wegener Institute and MARUM published it in Nature Geoscience on August 3. The cores come from one coastal setting, some carbon may have broken down before reaching the seabed, and delivery of permafrost carbon to the sea is projected to rise 70 to 150 percent by 2100.

- Carbon support with radial channels keeps fuel-cell catalyst particles small – Platinum-cobalt intermetallic nanoparticles stayed below 5 nanometres even after heating to 1,000 degrees Celsius when grown inside hollow carbon spheres threaded with radial nanochannels. The channels hold particles apart so they do not merge during the high-temperature step that orders the alloy, normally where such catalysts lose surface area. Gang Wu and colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis, with Brookhaven and Lawrence Berkeley national laboratories, published it in Nature Nanotechnology on August 6. The cells held 85 percent of performance after 150,000 accelerated voltage cycles and the team estimates about 25,000 hours of life, but that figure is extrapolated from accelerated laboratory testing and no manufacturing route has been shown.
- Magnetic microrobots pulled most microplastics out of laboratory soil and water – Ultrathin MXene flakes coated with magnetic nickel nanoparticles were tumbled through contaminated samples by a rotating magnetic field, sticking to microplastic particles and then drawn back out with their cargo. In water they removed 94 percent of polystyrene and 89 percent of PET in about an hour; in soil the figures were 81 and 72 percent, better than the same material used without magnetic motion. Jeonghyo Kim and colleagues published the results in NPG Asia Materials on August 8. Every test ran in the laboratory, the authors call for field trials before any real-world claim, and they flag possible leaching of metal ions and incomplete recovery of the robots.
