- Ketogenic diet cut liver fat most in a 42-person trial – A randomised trial in 42 people with obesity, prediabetes and fatty liver disease found the ketogenic arm lost 67 percent of its liver fat, against about 45 percent on the two comparison diets. All food was provided and each arm was steered to roughly 10 percent weight loss, so the gap is attributed to macronutrient composition rather than weight. Published in Cell Metabolism on August 27 by a Washington University School of Medicine team in St. Louis led by Samuel Klein. With 42 participants sharing one metabolic profile and fed by the study, it says nothing yet about free-living diets or about people without prediabetes.
- Blocking a stress receptor let injured mouse nerves regrow – Deleting the aryl hydrocarbon receptor from neurons, or blocking it with drugs, restored axon growth, movement and sensation in mice after peripheral nerve and spinal cord injury. The receptor acts as a brake: active signalling pushes an injured neuron toward managing protein stress instead of making the proteins needed to rebuild an axon. The work is entirely in mice, and dosing, treatment timing and any effect in human patients are left open.
- Deep learning matched expert humans at designing RNA pseudoknots – Generative models solved most of a blind set of 57 RNA pseudoknot design challenges on the citizen-science platform Eterna, matching experienced human designers. Designs were checked by single-nucleotide chemical mapping, compensatory mutagenesis and cryo-electron microscopy, and folded into ordered 3D shapes held by tertiary contacts the models never represented. Published in Science on August 27 by the team behind Eterna, using an RNet foundation model trained on earlier mapping data. It covers secondary structure only and produced no therapeutic or sensor; the claim is that some RNA design works without solving 3D prediction first.

- Roman Space Telescope cleared for an August 30 launch – NASA and SpaceX completed the launch readiness review on August 28 and declared the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope go for flight. Liftoff is set for 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30, on a Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, with forecasters giving 60 percent odds of acceptable weather. NASA’s mission blog puts the observatory about 30 days from the Sun-Earth L2 point, where it is to survey dark energy, map galaxies and search for exoplanets. The review clears the rocket, not the science: commissioning runs for months before any survey data exists.
- A rebuttal leaves cosmic acceleration where it was – An international team re-examined the Type Ia supernova evidence behind recent claims that cosmic expansion is slowing, and found the case for continued acceleration unchanged. They trace the contrary result to how the earlier analysis handled host-galaxy ages and stellar masses, corrections that feed into supernova brightness calibration. - A trapped ion revealed the optical Magnus effect for the first time – A single calcium ion in a trap showed that a tightly focused laser beam’s point of strongest interaction sits slightly off the beam centre, the optical analogue of the sideways force on a spinning ball. The ion served as a nanometre-scale probe of the field, and the displacement depended on wavelength alone rather than on focusing strength. - Galápagos corals put recent El Niño events above the past millennium – Coral cores from Wolf and Darwin islands indicate that El Niño events of the past 40 years were stronger than any in the sampled record of the previous thousand years. Sea temperatures were reconstructed from oxygen isotope and strontium-to-calcium ratios laid down month by month in living coral skeletons, then extended with fossil corals up to 4,500 years old. The record is regional rather than a continuous global series, and not all climate models predict stronger El Niño under warming.
- Where people go, not just what they build, moves wildlife – GPS records for 4,581 mammals and birds across 37 species in the continental United States were set against anonymised cellphone location data, using the 2019 to 2020 shift in human movement as a natural experiment. About 57 percent of species responded to both human presence and landscape modification, and roughly two-thirds moved range or niche in response to people alone. Published in Science on August 28 by a group led from UC Santa Barbara’s Bren School with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Yale. Responses ran opposite ways, wolves expanding and deer contracting, and the authors cannot say whether the shifts help or harm survival.
- Most induced quakes in western Canada came with foreshocks, but not all – An analysis of roughly 70,000 earthquakes in western Canada between 2014 and 2024 isolated 77 magnitude 3 or larger events tied to hydraulic fracturing, 71 of them preceded by smaller tremors within five kilometres over the previous five days. Foreshock counts ranged from more than 700 before one event to none before six others, so injection alone does not explain the pattern and local fault conditions decide it. The six silent cases carry the policy weight: the authors argue traffic-light monitoring should follow regional geology, because a quiet record does not certify a safe fault.

- X-ray pulses caught water rearranging during a proton-coupled electron transfer – Researchers recorded the first molecular-scale snapshots of proton-coupled electron transfer, the paired movement of an electron and a proton that underpins photosynthesis and much of catalysis, in a light-driven ruthenium complex. Ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy was combined with time-resolved X-ray scattering at a free-electron laser, with quantum chemistry used to interpret how the surrounding water reorganised. Published in Nature Communications on August 28 by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory with SLAC and university collaborators. The proton itself was never seen, since X-ray scattering responds to electron-rich atoms, so its behaviour is inferred and matched against calculations.
- Graphene grown at 300 degrees Celsius with a ceria catalyst – A chemical vapour deposition route using acetylene over cerium oxide nanoparticles produced graphene at 300 degrees Celsius, against temperatures approaching 900 degrees for conventional synthesis. Oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface do the work, and the setpoint selects the product: 450 degrees gives aggregated graphene, 600 degrees a porous form. Acetylene can be recovered from waste gas, biomass and recycled plastics, but the demonstration is laboratory scale and scalability is named as the next test.
