Google previews ‘Gemini Intelligence’ for Android ahead of I/O

On 13 May 2026, days before its I/O developer conference, Google previewed Gemini Intelligence: a system-level layer that pushes Gemini into the core of Android. The rollout begins this summer on the Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel lines, then expands across compatible Android devices — phones, watches, cars, glasses, and laptops — through the rest of the year.

The pitch is agentic by default. Gemini Intelligence can read what’s on screen, understand context across apps, and execute multi-step tasks like building a shopping cart, drafting a reply, or booking a reservation without the user stitching the apps together themselves. Examples shown include Chrome auto-browse, smarter form filling, AI-generated widgets, and an Android Auto mode that pulls context from messages, email, and calendar.

The move is also strategic: Google is racing to anchor Gemini at the operating-system layer before Apple’s expected AI reboot. Google framed the shift as moving “from an operating system to an intelligence system.”
