🧬 Life Sciences & Medicine

  • Blood immune cells enter the human brain from middle age – Immune cells born in the bone marrow cross into the human brain during ordinary ageing and adopt the identity of microglia, the brain’s resident immune population. The team traced their origin by matching somatic mutations shared between paired blood and brain samples from two post-mortem tissue collections. Julia A. Belk, Siddhartha Jaiswal and colleagues at Stanford published it in Nature on August 14. Because the tissue is post-mortem, the work cannot show whether the arriving cells drive disease or respond to it, and the authors report the pattern is absent in mice and non-human primates.
  • Stair climbing tracks lower cardiovascular death in pooled cohorts – People who climbed stairs regularly were 39 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease and 24 percent less likely to die of any cause than infrequent climbers. The meta-analysis screened nearly 1,900 studies and pooled nine, covering more than 480,000 people aged 35 to 84 followed for a median of 14 years. Sophie Paddock, Vassilios Vassiliou and colleagues at the University of East Anglia published it in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs. The pooled studies are observational and mostly rely on self-reported stair use, so they cannot separate the exercise from the baseline fitness of people who take stairs.
  • Two opposite GIP receptor treatments cut weight equally in mice – Activating the GIP receptor in the brainstem suppressed appetite, while blocking the same receptor in the hypothalamus released a brake on fullness signalling, and both produced comparable weight loss. The researchers used mice engineered to lack the receptor in selected brain regions, then tracked food intake, body weight, fat mass and glucose control. Jo Lewis and colleagues at the Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge published it in Nature Metabolism on August 15. The experiments were run entirely in mice, so whether human obesity drugs act through the same two routes is untested.

  • Double Chooz detects antineutrinos from a shut-down reactor – Antineutrinos were measured still streaming from reactor cores and spent-fuel pools after both units of a French power plant were switched off, the first direct observation of this residual emission. Roughly 100 candidate events were counted over 17.2 days, using more than 30 cubic metres of liquid scintillator sited about 400 metres from the Chooz plant. Anthony Onillon, Thierry Lasserre and the Double Chooz collaboration, led from the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, published it in Physical Review Letters on August 14. About 100 events from a single site is a small sample, and the measurement depended on exceptionally low backgrounds and on simulation to interpret.
  • Fermilab tightens the limit on a muon electric dipole moment – The Muon g-2 collaboration measured the muon’s electric dipole moment as (−0.35 ± 0.39) × 10⁻¹⁹ e·cm, consistent with zero, and set an upper bound of 1.1 × 10⁻¹⁹ e·cm at 95 percent confidence. Such a moment would mean the muon’s positive and negative charge are slightly offset, which the Standard Model predicts far below present sensitivity. The measurement used the 50-foot superconducting storage ring inherited from Brookhaven and was posted to arXiv on August 13 as a preprint that has not been peer reviewed. It is a null result, about 1.5 times tighter than the 2009 Brookhaven limit, and short of the sensitivity at which most competing models predict a signal.
  • JWST finds an early object too bright to be a star – An extremely red, compact source dating to the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang radiates roughly 100 billion times more energy than any star of its apparent size could produce. The favoured explanation is a black hole of about 100,000 solar masses wrapped in a dense envelope of nearly pure hydrogen and helium. Rohan Naidu, Robert Simcoe and colleagues at MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research published the object, catalogued MoM-BH*-1, in Nature on August 12. It is a single object and the interpretation is a model fitted to a spectrum, not a direct measurement of a black hole.

🌍 Earth, Climate & Environment

  • Fossil leaf cells record a 61 percent canopy loss during ancient warming – Forest canopy cover in Wyoming’s Hanna Basin rose briefly at the onset of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum 56 million years ago, then fell 61 percent in leaf area and stayed about 35 percent below its starting value for tens of thousands of years. Canopy density was read from the shapes of epidermal cells in fossil leaf cuticle, calibrated against modern forests. Regan Dunn of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and Ellen Currano of the University of Wyoming published it in Science on August 13. The record comes from a single basin, and the authors note that carbon is being released today about ten times faster than during the ancient warming.
  • Blood bicarbonate in a US survey rose as atmospheric CO2 rose – Blood bicarbonate among US survey participants rose about 7 percent between 1999 and 2020 while calcium and phosphorus fell, across a period when atmospheric CO2 went from 369 to more than 420 parts per million. The analysis used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which tests roughly 7,000 participants in each two-year cycle. Alexander Larcombe and Phil Bierwirth, of Curtin University and the Australian National University, published it in Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health. The result is an observational correlation with no demonstrated mechanism, and Bierwirth states it does not establish cause and effect.

  • Catalyst releases free electrons and inverts reduction selectivity – A photocatalyst was designed to eject an electron into the surrounding solution rather than hand it to whichever molecule is easiest to reduce, reversing the usual selectivity rule of electron-transfer chemistry. Solvated free electrons attach indiscriminately, and the researchers show that this indiscriminate first step can still be steered toward selective products. Zachary Wickens and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with groups at Colorado State University and the University of Colorado Boulder, published it in Nature. The work is a bench demonstration of a design principle rather than a scaled process, and its generality beyond the substrates tested remains unshown.
  • Superconducting circuit runs a heat engine cycle near absolute zero – A nanofabricated device combining a transmon qubit, a resonator and a quantum circuit refrigerator completed an Otto cycle and produced net positive work from heat near absolute zero. The refrigerator can be tuned to heat or cool the qubit on demand, and timed control pulses drove it around the four-stroke cycle. Tuomas Uusnäkki, Mikko Möttönen and colleagues at Aalto University published it in Nature Communications. The engine is not autonomous, since every stroke is triggered externally by microwave pulses, and cutting cabling inside large quantum computers remains a design goal, not a demonstrated capability.
  • Billion-atom simulation shows tungsten damage exceeding standard models – Simulated collision cascades in tungsten, the metal lining the hottest surfaces of a fusion reactor, produced more primary radiation damage at fusion-relevant recoil energies than conventional models predict. The team ran molecular dynamics on up to one billion atoms at once across three orders of magnitude in recoil energy. Jesper Byggmästar and colleagues at the University of Helsinki published it in Physical Review Letters on August 15. These are simulations rather than irradiation experiments, they cover single-recoil primary damage rather than cumulative dose, and grain boundaries and alloying elements were not included.
