- Genome scan points to two previously unknown human ancestors β Two archaic populations unrepresented by any sequenced fossil contributed DNA to living people: one that mixed with modern humans in Africa before 50,000 years ago, and a super-archaic lineage in people from Oceania that split off more than 1.8 million years ago. The method, TRACE, reconstructs the genealogy of each chromosome segment across hundreds of present-day genomes and flags ancestry too deep to come from any known group. Yulin Zhang, Arjun Biddanda and colleagues at UC Berkeley published it in Science on July 30. Neither lineage matches a fossil or an ancient genome, and with only one Denisovan genome published the authors cannot fully exclude known populations.
- Blood cancer progression may be encoded years before patients decline β In chronic blood cancers, the genetic features associated with later deterioration were already present long before any clinical change. Researchers sequenced whole genomes from more than 450 blood samples to build cellular family trees, following some patients for as long as 25 years. The work, from the Wellcome Sanger Institute with Cambridge University Hospitals, appeared in Cancer Discovery on July 31. The cohort was 30 patients, mostly with myeloproliferative neoplasms, at a single centre, so this is a candidate basis for surveillance rather than a validated predictive test.
- Membrane-repair proteins shield DNA stranded during cell division β When chromosomes fail to separate cleanly, a thin strand of DNA can stay stretched between the daughter cells, and ESCRT-III proteins, previously associated with membrane repair, coat that strand and limit damage to it. The team used cryo-electron microscopy and live-cell imaging, studying both spontaneous bridges and bridges induced by blocking DNA separation. King’s College London, with the University of Utah and Altos Labs, published the work in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology on July 28. The experiments were done in cultured cells, and the authors state they did not demonstrate a mechanistic link to cancer.
- Fat molecules tie obesity to Alzheimer’s pathology in mice β Phosphatidylethanolamines, lipids found in cell membranes, rise with obesity and appear to carry damaging signals to the brain, disturbing communication between brain cells and encouraging amyloid to accumulate. Restoring the lipid balance improved memory and brain function in the animals tested. A Houston Methodist team published the work in Molecular Neurodegeneration on July 30. The results come from mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease rather than people, and the authors say substantial further work is needed before a lipid-targeted prevention or therapy could be tested clinically.

- Curiosity finds the largest field of honeycomb fractures seen on Mars β NASA’s Curiosity rover photographed polygonal fractures 4 to 8 centimetres across spreading in every direction over a Martian valley and wrapping around a six-metre butte nicknamed Miraflores. The pattern was captured in a 360-degree panorama on the mission’s 4,930th and 4,931st Martian days, with shapes and rock chemistry measured on site. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced the observation on July 29. Mission scientists say the mechanism is unresolved: dried mud, repeated heating and cooling, and compression of buried sediment all remain candidates, and the textures are not on their own evidence of past life.
- eROSITA catalogue nearly doubles the count of known X-ray sources β The telescope’s second data release lists close to two million X-ray sources: more than 1.9 million point-like objects such as stars and accreting supermassive black holes, about 64,000 extended sources such as galaxy clusters and supernova remnants, and nearly 15,000 harder-band detections. It stacks the first three all-sky scans, roughly 556 days of observation, in the 0.2 to 2.3 keV band. The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics announced the release on July 31; the catalogue paper is arXiv:2607.27772. Coverage stops at the western Galactic hemisphere under the German-Russian data-sharing agreement, so this is half a sky, and classifications depend on how well optical and infrared counterparts are matched.
- Neptune’s inner moons look like fragments of destroyed icy bodies β Spectra of Larissa, Galatea and Proteus, and of Neptune’s rings, show magnesium-rich clay minerals unlike anything else measured in the outer solar system. The James Webb Space Telescope observations are read as exposing material from the deep interiors of larger icy bodies, broken up when Triton was captured and later reassembled into the moons seen today. A Caltech team published the work in Science Advances on July 29. The conclusion rests on surface spectra of three moons plus the rings, and the Triton capture sequence remains a model rather than an observed history.

- Most permafrost carbon washed into the Arctic Ocean stays in the seabed β Off Qikiqtaruk, also called Herschel Island, in the Canadian Arctic, microorganisms convert only about ten percent of the organic carbon delivered by eroding permafrost coasts into gases, while the rest remains buried. Researchers took sediment cores spanning roughly 50 years of deposits and used carbon-13 and carbon-14 isotopes to identify what the sediment bacteria consume, finding a preference for fresher marine carbon. The Alfred Wegener Institute and MARUM at the University of Bremen published the study in Nature Geoscience on July 31. It covers one coastal site, and the authors note some permafrost carbon may decompose in transit before reaching the seabed.
- Statistical tool flags rapid hurricane intensification up to five days out β A new method assigns probabilities that a tropical cyclone will intensify rapidly at lead times of up to five days in the Atlantic and three in the eastern Pacific, against one to three days from the comparable tool now used operationally. It applies logistic regression to 55 storm-structure and environmental variables taken from NOAA’s Global Ensemble Forecast System for 2019 to 2024. Christopher Rozoff and colleagues at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research published it in Weather and Forecasting. The authors say it does not resolve all the difficulties of intensity forecasting, and that more seasons of data and tests against other models are needed.

- Two-step mechanism identified for turning waste CO2 into solid graphite β Carbon dioxide reduced to solid carbon in molten salt passes through a peroxide intermediate in two steps, not the single step long assumed. The team built a custom microscope to watch the reaction run at 500 degrees Celsius, and the pathway held when the electrodes and the salt mixture were changed. Sander Ratso and colleagues at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, UC Berkeley and Estonia’s National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics published the work in Nature Communications on July 30. The demonstration is laboratory scale, the best combination of salts, electrodes, temperature and voltage is undetermined, and nothing has been shown at industrial scale.
- Hiroshima fallout debris yields a metal alloy not previously recorded β Glassy droplets recovered from beach sand in Hiroshima Bay, known as hiroshimaites, contain a homogeneous cubic phase of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, silicon and aluminium in a combination not documented before. The particles formed on 6 August 1945 as vaporised buildings and metal cooled inside the expanding fireball above 7,000 degrees, conditions hard to reproduce in a laboratory. Luca Bindi of the University of Florence and an international team published the finding in Science Advances on July 29. The material exists only as traces in historic debris, so its properties beyond composition and crystal structure are largely unmeasured.
