- Individualised mRNA cancer vaccine meets its phase 3 endpoints β Merck and Moderna reported that adding intismeran autogene, an individualised mRNA neoantigen therapy, to pembrolizumab lengthened recurrence-free survival after melanoma surgery. The INTerpath-001 trial randomised 1,137 patients with resected stage IIB to IV melanoma 2 to 1, and met its primary recurrence-free survival endpoint and its secondary distant metastasis-free survival endpoint at a pre-specified interim analysis. The companies announced it in a joint press release on August 19, not in a journal. No hazard ratios or survival curves were disclosed, overall survival is still accruing, and the data have not been peer reviewed.
- Skull bone marrow holds lymph node-like immune hubs in mice β Clusters in the skull’s bone marrow behave like miniature lymph nodes, with germinal-centre-like structures where helper T cells drive B cells to make antibodies against brain antigens. Conduits from the dura into the marrow carry cerebrospinal fluid and immune cells, so the hubs register a brain tumour before distant lymph nodes do. Jang Hyun Park, Jonathan Kipnis and colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis published it in Nature on August 19. The functional work is in mice, where disrupting the hubs made glioblastoma grow faster, and the human evidence is limited to similar-looking cells in skull marrow.
- Bioengineered vessel beats fistula for dialysis access at one year β A laboratory-grown acellular tissue engineered vessel outperformed a surgically created arteriovenous fistula for haemodialysis access. The V007 trial randomised 242 patients, and secondary patency at twelve months was 68.3 percent for the vessel against 62.2 percent for the fistula, with the joint superiority test across the six and twelve month endpoints at p=0.0071. Mohamad A. Hussain of Mass General Brigham and co-authors published the one-year results in The Lancet Digital Health on August 19. The gain sat mainly in women and in men with obesity or diabetes, surgeons could not be blinded, and Humacyte, which makes the vessel, funded the trial.

- CMS reads nuclear shape off oxygen and neon collisions β Collisions of light nuclei at the Large Hadron Collider produced long-range collective flow whose strength depends on the shape of the incoming nuclei. CMS measured two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations at 5.36 TeV per nucleon pair and found stronger elliptic flow in neon-neon than oxygen-oxygen collisions, consistent with an elongated neon-20 and a compact oxygen-16. The collaboration published the measurement in Physical Review Letters on August 17. It gives no numerical deformation for neon, and the measured triangular flow disagrees with model predictions, which the authors attribute to the treatment of initial-state fluctuations in small systems.
- Faint stars may make some early galaxies four times heavier β Deep spectra point to a large unseen population of low-mass stars in early galaxies, pushing their stellar masses above earlier estimates. The team combined JWST spectroscopy with older Very Large Telescope data to constrain the initial mass function in nine massive galaxies that had stopped forming stars, finding bottom-heavy distributions and, for one, about four times the previous mass. Chloe Cheng and colleagues at Leiden University published it in Nature Astronomy on August 18. Nine galaxies is a small sample, the mass function is inferred from integrated light rather than resolved stars, and heavier early galaxies make their formation timing harder to explain.

- European monitors count more than 32,000 excess deaths this summer β The EuroMomo network put excess mortality across participating countries at more than 32,000 deaths between mid-July and mid-August, covering this summer’s heatwaves. The estimate comes from a model comparing observed deaths with an expected baseline in 23 countries, while a tally compiled by Agence France-Presse from eight national authorities reaches about 33,000, including roughly 14,000 in Germany, 7,300 in France and 4,500 in Spain. EuroMomo issued the figures in its weekly bulletin and Agence France-Presse reported the compilation this week. These are modelled excess deaths, not certified heat deaths, the network omits much of eastern Europe, and EuroMomo says recent weeks will be revised.
- Fine particle pollution lowers plant water-use efficiency β Airborne PM2.5 reduces the carbon plants fix per unit of water lost, cancelling part of the gain from rising CO2 since the 2000s. Using tree-ring isotopes, eddy-covariance fluxes and satellite vegetation metrics, the authors trace the decline to suppressed photosynthesis rather than changed evapotranspiration, since particles cut photosynthetically active radiation and carboxylation capacity. Jian Wang, Yuyu Zhou and colleagues at the University of Hong Kong published it in Nature Climate Change, announced on August 19. The analysis is observational, and the authors report that current ecosystem models omit aerosol inputs entirely, so the effect cannot yet be reproduced independently.
- Iron hydride turns superionic under inner-core conditions β In diamond-anvil experiments, face-centred cubic iron hydride entered a superionic state in which the iron lattice stays fixed while hydrogen moves through it almost like a liquid. The transition showed up as a thermal expansion anomaly near 1,590 kelvin, at 50 to 110 gigapascals and above 2,000 kelvin, approximating the Earth’s inner core. Yoshihiro Nagaya, Yusuke Okazaki and Kenji Ohta at the Institute of Science Tokyo published it in Nature Geoscience, reported on August 21. Even superionic, the inferred hydrogen migration is about 0.1 micrometres per 10,000 years, so hydrogen trapped when the Earth formed would stay put.

- Silicon and diamond stretch elastically by about a tenth β Microfabricated single crystals of silicon and diamond sustained reversible tensile strains of 11.3 and 8.9 percent, with the deformation coming entirely from stretched atomic bonds. The team pulled samples along the [100] and [110] directions at room temperature while watching the lattice with in situ transmission electron microscopy, seeing pure lattice elongation with no extended defects or phase change. Jiayi Li, Heyi Wang and Yang Lu at the University of Hong Kong published the measurements in Physical Review Letters, reported on August 20. The specimens were micrometre-scale and tested only at room temperature, so the figures describe nearly defect-free samples, not bulk wafers or working devices.
- Literature mining yields two heat-stable lead-free dielectrics β A machine-learning pipeline mined published papers for dielectric data, then screened virtual compositions for lead-free ceramic capacitor materials stable across a wide temperature range. It drew 1,202 property records from 448 papers and narrowed roughly 150 million candidate compositions to 37, of which two tin-doped ones were synthesised and reached room-temperature dielectric constants of 3,422 and 3,307, meeting the X5R, X6R and X7R stability classes. Kwanwoo Song, Ho Won Jang and colleagues at Seoul National University published it in Nature Communications, announced on August 19. Only those two candidates were made and measured, both laboratory specimens rather than finished capacitors, leaving manufacturability and reliability untested.
